Xeno Assault 2 Review
Fun, but value for money?
You can buy it at RegNow for that price.
Fast action packed gameplay, interesting weapons & secondary weapons, low learning curve.
No in-game instructions, disappointing graphics, poor value-for-money.
Xeno Assault II is a game based around space invaders (if you can remember that far back!) or perhaps younger readers would better recognise the name ‘R-Type’
If you’ve ever played either of the afformentioned games you will find Xeno pretty easy to get into. The learning curve is pretty shallow, you basicly move your ship from side to side (sometimes forwards and backwards to dodge projectiles) and the left mouse button (or space bar) to shoot. The right mouse button is also used for limited ‘bonus’ ammo such as quick firing lasers.
The game starts off at a fair pace giving you time to get used to the controls, but soon it become an (enjoyable) hectic frenzy of dodging and shooting.
The graphics for the game are somewhat of a letdown given, that I have played similar games that are much older, for instance I played X-Type on the Amiga 1200 around 13 years ago, and the graphics of that game where disincly better then Xeno Assault II. To me this is inexcusable.
Of course to some people graphics do not matter and (quite rightly) gameplay is the more important aspect. And while game can be quite addictive, I cannot recommend it as value for money. If this game had been selling for $5.00 or $7.00 I would have no qualms about recommending it, however at just under $18.00 better and cheaper games are available.
On a final note, I found it totally ridiculous that the game had no ‘in game’ instructions, instead it minimised and took me to a website. One of the major points of buying a game is so that you can play it when you are not connected to the internet. I find this kind of sloppy work highly irritating, given the fact that it would take VERY little extra work to embed instructions into the game itself.
It may seem that I have been harsh on Xeno Assault II, but taking into consideration that you can buy X-Reunion and many other superior games for a similar price that Xeno costs its hard to recommend this game.
