Review:

Newest to arrive in the genre of spelling games is Dungeon Scroll, which provides the player with an enjoyable but linear adventure experience. The goal is to progress through several dungeons, in which several creatures will attempt to stop you.

In classic adventure / rpg style, you and your foes will trade blows and, should victory be achieved, an item is often awarded for your success.

Except in Dungeon Scroll's case, damage is dealt by way of spelling words from a variety of jumbled letters given to you. The bigger the word you are able to piece together, the more damage your enemies will take. Items come in the form of special letter that will give your words more damage when used, health potions and the Oracle, a powerful spell that instantly gives you the biggest word possible from your available letters.

Most interesting are the fights against "boss" enemies. Not only will they require much bigger words to defeat, but once you've won you receive a book that allows you to choose an upgrade for your character. These include bonuses to spell damage or maximum health.

Unfortunately this is the long and short of Dungeon Scroll. While a younger audience will enjoy the game right to its end, most gamers will likely become bored with the repetitive nature of the action. Spell words to defeat monsters, rinse, repeat.

For the price of $15, Dungeon Scroll is probably a bit more than many people will want to spend. When compared against other spelling games that are either completely free or offer a tremendously richer experience, Dungeon Scroll comes up far too short to justify a purchase.

Conclusion:

Kids will probably love it, but older gamers will lose interest quickly.
