Crusaders Of Space Review
Worth the Price?
You can buy it at RegNow for that price.
-Excellent soundtrack -Scale of game (100 missions) -Fast paced gameplay -Constantly changing enemies
-Dull interface -No lore/story -Dated graphics -Grammatical errors -Price
Crusaders of Space falls into the crowded, overpopulated genre of space shooters. It takes a lot for a game to stand out, add in the hefty price and the genre it falls under, Alawar really had to push the envelope in order to produce a worth-while title.
~The Good~
In some aspects, they succeeded. The game's interface, while dull, serves its purpose and is easy to use. You have the option to change ammo types (rockets or standard) as well as glance at the Level/Mission you are on. Each level brings a new type of enemy, which is interesting and brings an element of surprise to the game as well as an incentive to continue. The soundtrack presented in the demo was surprisingly good. Fast paced, exciting; it keeps the flow of the game fast and interesting. It's the redeeming qualities of the game that give its various downfalls much more impact.
~The Bad~
The game itself seems very dated. The graphics, menu, power ups, all seem like something you would expect from a browser based game 5 or 6 years ago. While the graphics aren't necessarily bad, they certainly don't do the game any justice and come off as quite dull. There also isn't any lore or back story to the game. While this doesn't directly detract from the gameplay, it would have been nice to have been given at least a bit of a story behind it. Then again, judging by the various grammatical errors found in the game, it might have been a good idea to leave the story out...
If you're looking for a budget-based game for $15, it would be wise to look elsewhere. While Crusaders of Space isn't a bad title, the overall dated feel of it all ruins what was otherwise a worthwhile play.
