The last few years have seen a burgeoning trade in free and pay-per-feature MMOs. Allods is one of the newest of these. Its parent company, GALA NET, is a Russian venture that sank millions into this game. And it shows.
Allods is gorgeous. The graphics are easily on par with other major MMOs such as World of Warcraft. The attention to artistic detail is downright breathtaking at times as the game is full of expansive vistas and otherworldly ambiance. The animation quality is top notch, as well, and looks very natural.
The setting is an odd one. At first glance Allods might seem to resemble World of Warcraft a bit too much, but once you get into it you'll find that it has its own unique, and very Russian, flavor. The game follows two factions, the League and the Empire, which duke it out over the floating islands in astral space that are all that remain of their homeworld.
Because Allods is a new game, you may encounter the occasional glitch and you will also find that the game's item shop offers limited customization. Also, you will find that gameplay changes significantly once you hit level 20, when the focus shifts to airship combat rather than the standard questing fare of most MMOs.
Overall, Allods makes for a promising game. It has not fulfilled its potential quite yet, but it's well on its way to becoming a great game.
